What Drainworld Is

Drainworld is an art project by Drainvader. Physical art installations — 3D-printed pixel art drain covers — are installed in public spaces in San Francisco. Each installation has an AI-powered character you can talk to by texting its phone number.

What We Collect

When you text a Drainworld character, we store:

  • Your phone number — stored as a one-way hash, not in plain text. We use this to maintain conversation continuity so the character remembers talking to you.
  • Your messages — the text and photos you send. Characters remember recent conversations (the last 20 messages) to maintain context.
  • Selfie verification status — whether you've visited the installation in person. We do not store the photos you send for verification; they are processed in memory and discarded.

We do not collect your name, email, location, or any other personal information unless you voluntarily share it in conversation.

How We Use Your Data

Your data is used for one purpose: powering conversations with Drainworld characters.

  • Characters use your conversation history to remember what you've talked about and respond in context.
  • We use AI (Anthropic's Claude) to generate character responses. Your messages are sent to the Anthropic API for processing. Anthropic's data usage policy applies to that processing.
  • We do not use your data for advertising, marketing, analytics, or any purpose beyond the art project itself.

What We Don't Do

  • We do not sell your data to anyone.
  • We do not share your data with third parties for marketing purposes.
  • We do not use your data to train AI models.
  • We do not send unsolicited messages. Characters only respond when you text them first.
  • Characters never share what one person tells them with another person.

Data Storage

All conversation data is stored on our servers. Data is not backed up to third-party cloud storage services beyond our hosting provider (Railway).

Data Retention

  • Conversations are kept as a rolling window of the most recent 20 messages per contact.
  • Older messages are automatically discarded.
  • Character memory files (narrative summaries of interactions) are retained for the life of the project.

Your Rights

  • Opt out anytime — text STOP to any Drainworld number to stop receiving messages.
  • Deletion — contact us at privacy@drainvader.com to request deletion of all data associated with your phone number.
  • Access — contact us to request a copy of data associated with your phone number.

Children

Drainworld is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children.

Changes

We may update this policy. Changes will be posted at this URL.
